WE GOT THIS!

THIS WEEK HAS BEEN WILD, AS I AM SURE YOURS HAS BEEN TOO! AS PARENTS WE’RE GIVEN THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO MODEL AND SHAPE OUR CHILDREN'S VIEW OF THE WORLD BY THE WAY IN WHICH WE HANDLE ADVERSITY. TIMES ARE INDEED SCARY RIGHT NOW BUT I’M CONSTANTLY REMINDING MYSELF ABOUT THE RESILIENCY OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT. WE GOT THIS!
WITH ALL 3 KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL I’M DESPERATELY TRYING NOT TO RESORT TO JUST LETTING THEM WATCH HOURS OF TV, YOUTUBE, OR FOR SHAUN, PLAY HIS NINTENDO SWITCH ALL DAY LONG.   TO KEEP MY LIFE FEELING SOMEWHAT NORMAL I CREATED A SCHEDULE THAT GIVES THEM SOME LENIENCY WHILE STILL REQUIRING THEM TO COMPLETE THEIR SCHOOL WORK. I DON’T WANT MY KIDS, (THE OLDER ONES ESPECIALLY), TO LOOK BACK ON THIS TIME NEGATIVELY.
I’VE ALSO BEEN REFLECTING ON CHANGE IN GENERAL AND HOW SLOWING DOWN AFFECTS NOT ONLY US AND OUR DAILY ROUTINE BUT HOW IT ALSO IMPACTS OUR ENTIRE WORLD. WE LIVE SUCH FAST PACED LIVES RIGHT NOW AND HICCUPS LIKE THIS FORCE US TO SLOW DOWN . THE OPTIMIST IN ME FEELS LIKE PERHAPS THIS RE-SET IS OUR UNIVERSES WAY OF SAYING THAT WE NEED TO RE-ACCESS.
SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE BEEN DOING WITH THE KIDS:
  • PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AFTER BREAKFAST FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF RUN THROUGH OF WHAT THE DAY WILL LOOK LIKE.
  • MORNING “HOMEWORK” FOLLOWED BY SNACK TIME AND RECESS WHICH IS USUALLY PLAYING OUTSIDE OR IF IT’S RAINING (BECAUSE WE’VE HAD SO MUCH OF IT IN LA) WE DO DANCE PARTY’S OR PLAY HIDE AND SEEK.
  • MAKE COOKIES (WE’VE DONE THIS TWICE NOW). I GUESS I’M OFFICIALLY OFF WHOLE 30 LOL.
  • LUNCH TIME FOLLOWED BY IANS NAP TIME.
  • WHEN IAN NAPS THE OLDER KIDS AND I READ BOOKS OR I GIVE THEM SOME IPAD/TV TIME SO I CAN GET SOME WORK DONE.
  • EVENINGS ARE USUALLY MAKE DINNER, HANG OUT AS A FAMILY IN THE TV ROOM AND THEN BATH/READING/BED FOR THE KIDS.
SELF CARE HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO IMPORTANT TO ME. JUST LAST NIGHT I SOAKED IN AN EPSOM SALT BATH AND PUT ON A FACE MASK ON WHILE LISTENING TO AIR’S MOON SAFARI ALBUM. IT’S AMAZING HOW WELL THE SIMPLE PLEASURES IN LIFE CAN HELP MANAGE STRESS. I’VE ALSO BEEN TAKING RUNS WITH JOLENE WHEN I CAN. IT FEELS SO GOOD TO GET OUTSIDE.
RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS AND HAVING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THIS TIME HAS IT’S UPS AND DOWNS. ON ONE HAND, THE IDEA OF A RECESSION SCARES THE SH*T OUT OF ME AND ON THE OTHER HAND I KNOW THAT I’VE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE (HELLO 2008!) AND I’M FULLY CAPABLE OF GETTING THROUGH IT. I HATE TO THINK OF THE IDEA OF HAVING TO PIVOT AND CHANGE WHEN, AS A COMPANY, WE WERE REALLY GETTING INTO AN AWESOME GROOVE AND DOING AMAZING THINGS. I’M STAYING POSITIVE, HOPEFUL AND DETERMINED. AT THIS POINT, THAT’S ALL WE CAN DO. I’M ALSO NOT JUMPING TOO FAR AHEAD IN MY THOUGHTS OF THE FUTURE. ONE DAY AT A TIME HAS BEEN MY MOTO THESE DAYS.

THERE IS NOT ONE PERSON RIGHT NOW ON THIS PLANET THAT IS NOT BEING PHYSICALLY OR MENTALLY AFFECTED AND FOR THAT REASON WE ARE ALL UNITED. IT’S A CHALLENGE TO KEEP OUR HEADS UP, STAY POSITIVE AND PERSEVERE DURING DIFFICULT TIMES BUT WE NEED TO KEEP GOING AND STAY STRONG. ENDURING THESE OBSTACLES AND WEATHERING THE STORM IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PERSONAL AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND AS A COMMUNITY WE WILL ALL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER.

SENDING YOU LOVE, LAURA ODELL.
